This 8ft tall sculpture was recently commissioned for the lobby of the new JW MARRIOT in the heart of Dallas' Arts District. Made from layers upon layers of Birch Plywood, each layer is cut and stacked, then carved and shaped by hand. The surface is sanded and polished smooth then finished in a black dye and clear coat. Based on the ideas of death and rebirth, BLACK LOTUS is a slight departure from my purely design oriented objects and symbolizes something more personal. An open vessel, appearing almost large enough to give shelter or to envelope the viewer in its ominous dark pedals, can feel both intimidating and comforting in its presence.
